“I heartily recommend it to all caravanists whether you’ve been ‘vanning for years or whether you are a new boy”. The Sun, 9 June 2007
Jeremy Clarkson, BBC Top Gear presenter

The latest in the popular Teach Yourself series of books by publishers Hodder Education is Teach Yourself Caravanning. Produced in association with The Caravan Club, the 180-page illustrated book is a useful guide, not just for the complete novice but as a handy reference for the more seasoned caravanner. With the popularity of caravanning at an all-time high, and Caravan Club membership at record levels, there are even more first-timers looking for guidance with getting started.

The author is well-known caravanning journalist, Rob McCabe, a regular contributor to The Caravan Club’s own Magazine. Rob explains in a clear and entertaining way how to reach the ultimate goal of a ‘relaxed holiday’ by
• finding out about the different caravan layouts
• getting tips on towing safely
• learning about touring and setting up your pitch.

In the Foreword to the guide, former Foreign Secretary the Rt Hon Margaret Beckett, says that she is pleased to see that caravanning today remains as popular as when she started out. “It best suits those who enjoy the freedom of being able to take to the open road and end up in any number of interesting and beautiful places,” she goes on to say.

Teach Yourself Caravanning is available from the online shop on The Caravan Club website at http://www.caravanclub.co.uk/shop for £6.99 (exc p&p), as well as from all usual bookshops and retailers (RRP £8.99).

cfadmindave writes "On Friday 6 July at 1145 hrs, TV presenter and journalist Steve Berry cut the ceremonial ribbon to mark the official opening of Burrs Country Park Caravan Club Site, near Bury, Lancashire following a £1.3 million development programme.

The Caravan Club took a 60-year lease from the local authority in April 2005 and development work started almost immediately, so the Site was open for business in March the following year. Since then it has proved extremely popular with members and visitors alike, and because it is open all year it complements the other leisure activities and events that draw people to the Country Park and its surroundings.

This is the first ‘green field’ development The Club has undertaken for many years and great care was taken so that the extensive ground remodelling and landscaping was sympathetic to the open parkland feel of the area. The area has immense value in terms of species richness, providing a green oasis in the Greater Manchester conurbation. The Club has done its bit by environmentally sensitive planting of indigenous shrubs and plants to encourage biodiversity, and by retaining the old water course as a wetland conservation area.

The Site itself offers 85 pitches in total, 64 of which are hardstandings and 21 are reinforced grass, so that visitors are able to stay in all weathers and all seasons. The top-quality facilities include new toilet block, enclosed vegetable preparation area, laundry, a bathroom for the disabled, and a baby and toddler room.

There is a whole range of activities for visitors to enjoy in and around the 100-acre park itself. These include climbing, canoeing (including a slalom course for the more adventurous), orienteering, "
