Having been an experienced camper of the canvas kind for over twenty years (scouting and social )we made the error of buying a trailer tent last year.Unfortunately our two sons have now flown the coop so to speak and left myself and my wife to cope with a large six-berth TT on our own.We attempted to erect the TT with some difficulty in good weather and realised that this was not for us anymore, therefore the sale of the TT at the end of this season and the purchase of a decently comfortable new two berth caravan will follow.Having decided to do this, we obviously want the best deal possible and would like some advice from the older sages who have "been there done that",so,when would be the best time in the year to purchase a new or last year`s model of van?

Hi if you want a new van go to the october show all the 2008 models will be for sale and on offer at the NEC, you can win tickets on this site if you look under the competitions section. How much are you looking to spend?

Where in North Wales are you?

Hi, I am trying desperately to persuade my wife to visit the show in October but we are away in Dorset for the same period visiting relatives.I even tried to coax her to stopover in Birmingham overnight in order to visit the show!!.I`ve inundated myself with brochures of various makes of van but am restricted by the towing capacity of my Seat Altea(kerbwt=1485kg:-Towing@85%=1260kg approx). The Lunar,Bailey and Swift Range seem to fit the bill but would like to make sure of the comfort and reliability level of these before making a firm decision.Price I would like to pay is in the region of about 12k to 14k all in (For a 2 Berth, awning included)Unfortunately funds will not be in place until the beginning of early next year, but, as with anything I purchase I do my research prior to buying to make sure that it is the right decision.Usually starts with plenty of surfing the net and then asking the people that are in the know, with finally narrowing down the competition before parting with my Wife`s inheritance!!.By the way we are domiciled in Marchwiel, just on the outskirts of Wrexham.

Having worked in sales for a tourer dealer until recently I can tell you that you will get the best deal on a brand new van anytime from march onwards, this would usually be a ex demo model but you will save the most money as the sales person will generally have alot more discount to use, another problem can be that the model you have researched and chosen may have already been sold, and you either have to comprimise, or wait for the next years model to arrive.

If you decide to buy a factory fresh van then the nec is your best bet, having been a sales person on stands there for many years I can honestly say that I have sold vans at vertually no profit, as the compitition is horrendous between dealers, go for 2 days, see different dealers, if your willing to travel to collect the van you will save a fortune!

On used vans the savings are never great, all depends what the dealer bought it for, but if you can save £500 on the in window price your doing well.

I hope this info is of use and makes sence, let me know if you want any more info.

Thanks for the info and apologies for only answering now.We are finally in the position of buying a van at last and,lo and behold ,just when the new Bailey Pageant 7 range is due out!!!.
WE are thinking of getting a Provence 5 berth as this will serve all our needs,(also the layout has been altered from the series 6 range and now has the parallel seating in the front ).
Do you think that we will be able to get any sort of discount or extras thrown in as we intend to pay cash ( and no part-ex. ) or do you think because it is a brand new model we wil be at a disadvantage ?.
Initially,we visited the NEC show in Oct 07 and spoke to a Bailey sales rep from Chipping Sodbury near Bristol who offered us almost £1000 straight away off a new van.The only problem with this is that we live in N.Wales and am unsure as to how the service and warranty would be affected.(no problem as to picking the van up though )Or would it be better just to go to our local dealer (Discover, formerly Harringtons Nr Chester )any advice would be greatly appreciated

Vertenna

I'm sure there will be a lot of people here give you some opinions on the various models. My website below may highlight a few extra models for you to look at. I created this so that people can put in their own criteria to be shown what models fir their needs.

There is no pushing to point you towards any models, justa list so you can research them and post questions about the various models your interested in on the forums here.

Good luck.

Paul

Thanks for the advice Paul,I appreciate all the hard work you have put in to your website. When I entered my requirements into your site it virtually gave me the exact list of models which I took with me to the NEC last October. So we are definitely on the same wavelength !!.
I have actually now pre-ordered a van ( Bailey Pageant Champagne Series 7 )and am now waiting for the day when it is delivered ( Not too long I hope ! )

Thanks again,
Trev S-J
