Is it not rather ironic that those who choose to drive motorhomes instead of towing caravans have the need to tow small cars on A Frames as well. We call those motorhomers TUGGERS. In my opinion, if anyone requires to tow, it is better to use a car and caravan. A Frames are not entirely legal in europe. It would appear that the original concept of the freedom of moving on each day touring with a motorhome has all but disappeared. |

a frames not quite legal to tow in the UK either..the instructions for use say"for recovery of cars only" and any car over 750kgs is meant to have coupled brakes
I used to wild camp with our old bedford cf camper van before we had a baby and moved back to caravans mainly due to the extra space.. |

I dont see the point in using a campervan if you tow a car either but each to their own i guess.
Having said that if i had one of them huge RVs then i would want a car behind me as you cant pop to the shop in that, and having had a large motorhome in the past I can see why you would want/need a car for larger vehicles as we just couldnt park anywhere with it so we sold it and went back to caravans (9 months of our life we will never get back) |

One of the reasons we sold our motorhome, was that we were taking the car more and more. And found it was getting expensive to take two vehicles on weekends away.

we sold ours as really didnt see the point in having a car for each of us and a motorhome sitting on the driveway during the week not being used..plus you get more room in a caravan and no need for tax or mot each year along with expensive insurance.. |

Perhaps it a case of Oneupmanship with the Motorhome fraternity as some of them think there above caravanners and were no better than Gypsy's |

I dont think that Oneupmanship comes in to it. It is a case of what suits. |

I would urge anyone to think long & hard before getting a mtorhome, they are astronomically expensive to purchase, & when you consider the MOT, tax & insurance costs they are more expensive to keep than a caravan as well.
But the main problem in my eyes is the fact you have to pack everything away & batten down all the hatches every time you want to go to the shops. Unless you become a 'tugger' (made me laugh, that one. Never heard it before). Then you're wearing out all the running gear on a small/city car whilst preserving it's engine. I would be very angry if I bought a car, 2nd hand, only to find out it had been tugged around the world on the back of an RV.
Occasionally, from where I live, I make a trip up the a22, through East Grinstead & on, towards the m25. On this route is a very impressive, extremely large motorhome/RV. It is huge! & where is it? It's parked in the drive of a house. Always just sitting there, in the driveway. Tens of thousands of pounds just sitting there, doing absolutely nothing because it's too big to park & really too big to drive most places.
It's a shame really. |
