Hi,
New to the list "waves!"
We would love to go to see the Millau Viaduct in the south of France. Has anybody done this trip, or could advise us generally about taking the van over there.
Travelling in France could not be easier. The roads are far wider and better than they are in this country. However, many of the new roads have a toll connected to them and from the North to the South, this can be quite expensive. If expense is not a problem, then these are the roads for you. Very little traffic and I have never seen a traffic jam ever, in all the years that I have been driving abroad.
France has a unique way of paying for its roads. They set a toll on all new road until it is paid for, then the toll is taken off. Something this country should look into in my opinion. One other thing to bare in mind is that many of the roads have two or three numbers attached to them. i.e. A16, D24. Some maps will show A16 and others will show D24. But all the junctions are marked, so you should not have a problem
Try and select a campsite as close to your destination as possible. May I suggest The Alan Rogers books, these cover the whole of Europe and give excellent advice.
If you have a GPS, many are able to select whether you wish to travel through tolls or avoid them. Many also have the facility to select which vehicle you are driving. This allows you the added advantage of not being taken up any old dirt track, of which there are many, because France is a very agricultural nation as you will see on your journey.
If this your first trip to Europe with you caravan, may I personally wish you the best of luck , as I am sure you will enjoy every minute of this exciting adventure.
