A newbie to this site and just purchased a 2006 series 5 Bailey Champagne caravan. Lots of goodies came with the van, but no manual (appleied for a new manual, its in the post).

My problem is that the van came with a mover and 110 leisure battery, which when delivered the electrics worked (12v), tried to move with the mover and the van would move but after 3/4 metres it would stall, I put this down to the battery as the voltmeter in the van was drifting towards the bottom of the scale. Not having a battery charger I connected the mains lead overnight to charge the battery (probably not what it was designed to do), this had little effect in that the mover behaved about the same. Decided to invest in a 16 amp battery charger from my local dealer (£79), attempted to charge up the battery overnight and found it to display a code of (F05) which translated to battery no good. I tried a couple of battery recondition modes but to no avail. Went out and purchased a new battery today, put it on the van and I am unable to use anyting 12v i.e. no lights etc and the voltmeter does not register anything.

I have tried the master control on the main panel (near the door), also tried the red switch inside the battery box (it appears to only have two positions 12 O'clock and 14 to 3) neither did the trick. Looked at the fuse board/consumer unit and the trips were in the on position and looked at the battery fuse and it appeared intact.

Any suggestions, it must be somthing simple?

Apologise for going on a bit but thought it may help the diagnosis.

First off your caravan charger is fine for charging the battery so dont worry about that.

Second can you put the old battery on the van to see if you have any power?

Its not common but new batteries have been found to be dud.

What voltage does your new battery show on a multimeter?

Tried the old battery it was the same (no reading on the voltmeter or use of any appliances i.e. lights). Although everything appeared fine until I removed the battery for charging due to it not being charged enough to use the mover.

The red isolation switch inside the battery box only has two positions and I have tried them both?

New battery now on trickle charge overnight and it had the green showing at the top and appeared to be 100% also 13.4 rang a bell when I put it on charge.

Ok first you need to get a multimeter and test the battery that you are going to use in the van.

I suspect that you have blown the main battery fuse so you need to take it out and inspect it, if your multimeter has a continuity setting test the fuse for continuity.

You should invest in a multimeter if you don't have one, maplins sell them for a reasonable price. You wont regret buying one as they are very handy for many things.

Buying a multimeter is a great investment, I actually have three now from using them over the years.

Usually a new battery will come fairly well charged (not full) so it sounds like either your switch to switch over form the car / leisure battery is at fault or there is a fuse gone somewhere.

Another cheap test is to get a 12volt lightbulb and test the battery, not a precise test but at least you can see if there is any power at all.

Also make sure that nothing is running in the Caravan when you have it connected as a low battery will probably show zero on the internal meter if something is trying to use it.

If the batteries are not sealed check that the electrolyte levels are correct. I have some basic information on my website below concerning leisure batteries and electrics which might enlighten you a little in to how it all works.

Hi
No 12 power in the van
Not sure about your model / year but later models 05 onwards
There is an in line fuse rated at 20-25 amp this is located from inside the van under or close to the battery locker box out of sight

Mover
The cables for the mover will be fitted direct to the battery with an isolation switch ( the red key )
If the battery was flat the control unit ( dependent on manufacturer ) may need the reset switch resetting
Some makes of mover have a umbilical cord in case the battery in the hand set goes flat / faulty may be worth trying the umbilical
You could also try the mover with out engaging the rollers to test that the motors run ( of load )

If the mover is a powr touch ring there tech help line

Found the problem to be a blown fuse which was the battery feed!

Without the handbook (in the post) I was thinking there could have been an isolator switch somewhere. I may have caused the fuse to blow by disconnecting/reconnecting the batterry with the master switch in the on position?
