Hello all, new to this forum and new to caravaning! In fact we havent got one yet and have some questions.
After convincing my Husband we need a van and to go and see some, he had an insurance pannic. Glad he did, and now I can ask the people that know.
Our car insurance only will cover us 3rd party when towing. Is this normal? do you have to upgrade? Or does the insurance you get for the caravan cover damage to your car when towing?
I hope to hear from you soon, ems. |

Good post and welcome to CF, When i take my insurance i ask them to ensure i am able to tow a van they say yes but if you hit some one the van is not covered, this is why you have caravan insurance.
You say it only covers the car third party are you sure?? It should cover the car as standard and any damage your van does to anyone else.
I await to be corrected by other members |

Thank you so much for the welcome and quick responce.
Our insurance company are not the best, last car was a pajero and imports are a bit dodgy to insure so we found out. Will renew with someone else but I cant afford for this new car to only be covered 3rd party. The broker had to check with the ins company and yes, only 3rd party when towing a van. We have never towed before and although the van will be old it is a huge worry to me.
Is there towing cover you can take out on top?
If anyone has any ideas for me I would be gratefull.
I am a women with a mission, to go caravaning..............
Please help. xx |

Hi, Normal car insurance will cover the car and the caravan, but on the caravan it only covers it against third party risks. i.e. if you have the misfortune to hit someone or something this is why you need to have a seperate caravn insurance. I have mine insured via the caravan club and quite recently had the misfortune of catching a gateway, but the insurance was sorted extremely quick to I think it pays to use the best you can afford.

Hi Ems
Welcome to CF. Great first post.
I to insure with the Caravan club. They will also cover your van for theft and damaged when not towing, fire etc. But also cover your awning if you plan to get one and the other equipment you will need like water carriers, BBQ etc etc One thing to also consider is your house insurance my cover some personal items away from the home ie in your caravan but you need to read the small print.
If you are concerned about towing then there are towing courses that you can enroll onto, again the Caravan club will run these but there are others. I feel the key to towing is watch your speed, watch your speed ensure your tyres on the van are in good nick and get the van serviced annually. Most of all ensure your van is matched to your tow car as far as weight and watch your speed.

Hi I don't know about the car cover as mine is a company car, but the breakdown cover provided with the car does not cover towing with the van:!:
So I have taken out recovery with Green Flag, £30 for the year, bargain.
With regards to van insurance, I tried the CC and the CCC but went for Shield your Van they are quoted in Which Caravan and work with CaSSOA so if you use CaSSOA storage, have good van security you can get great cover for a fair price. £249.00 for £12,500 van and £1,500 awning and contents. |
