Hi all.
Quite to this caravanning game but I wonder if anyone can help.
In a couple of weeks we are going too Newcsatle where I'm running in the Great North Run. We are staying in South Shields on a public park where the council allow campers and caravanners for the weekend. Obviously there won't be any hook up so we will be on 12 volt. I've been looking everywhere for a cable with the two pin plug which plugs into the 12v socket in the caravan on one end, and a jack pin type plug on the other for the tv, but can't find anything of the like anywhere. What do you people use to power your tv's when you are rallying? Our tv is a 15" flat screen with built in dvd. Hope this all makes sence!
Look forward to your replies.
Phil. |

Hi thanks for the reply.
I'm taking two 110 batteries, hoping this wiil be enough.
What sort of inverter would I need and how do I connect it up to my tv?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks very much for your help.
I've just had a look at Maplins website and they've got a few.
Thanks again

Whats with Aldi & Lidl do you have share in them?
Joking appart, if they have the stuff in thats fine.
BUT
I sometimes cannot wait.
Maplins are a good solution as well.

Is it best to use a 12v tv or a normal tv ( is this where you would use an inverter?
I always use a normal TV (but i dont rally) but when i had the MH i simply used and invertor. We dont watch that much TV in the van but i guess it depends what the weather is like. i have an invertor for the times we dont have EHU. |

As well as an inverter, you could use an amperor voltage regulator, these are specially designed for use with LCD TV's that normally run off a 240v/12v adapter.
As for best inverter to use, ideally you want a pure sine wave one, as this is the cleanest form of electricity. Although you may get away with a modified sine wave one, but you also may get lines on the screen or interference with the sound. |

There are three ways of running a tv in your caravan:
1) With a normal mains tv, either off Electric Hook Up (EHU) or via an inverter. An inverter is a device that converts 12v DC (from your leisure battery) to 240v mains. An inverter is around 80-90% efficient, depending on the quality.
2) If you have or purchase a tv that runs off a mains adapter (i.e. the adapter plugs into the mains, but the output is 12v DC into the tv), you can buy an amperor voltage stabiliser. This basically takes the 12v DC from your battery and makes sure it stays at a steady 12 volts. As your batteries can put out under or over 12v, it protects your tv. Amperor voltage stabilisers are a more efficient way of powering your tv than an inverter, the power is also purer. Downside is they will only work if your tv runs on 12v DC.
3) Buy a dedicated 12/240v TV, these are available from most caravan accessory shops, but tend to be more expensive. They have a regulator built it to protect it from over/under voltage. |
