Please do not be caught by intresting adverts. The longest permisable caravan that can be towed in the UK is 22 foot long which is 6.67m long.. 8 meters is outside this limit. |

Suenmike:
The following statement about the legal size of caravans is from the Caravan Club:-
"The maximum body length of caravan that may be towed on British roads by a motor car (vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Weight not exceeding 3.500kg) is 7 metres (22 ft 11½ in). The maximum width is 2.3 metres (7 ft 6½ in). "
Note specifically that the rule is for "Body" size not length overall.
There appears no limitations on the overall size, just the body itself.
There are many caravans that overall are around 8 metres, however its prudent to make sites aware if over 7 metres overall but it never seems a problem if they know. |

We changed to a Coachman Pastiche last year, earlier this year I phoned the haven site at Perranporth for prices for the summer as we have stayed there before, to be told the caravan was too long as they are now implementing lenght restrictions in peak season.
Not only are there prices extortionate, but having used there sites for over 14 years while my children were growing up, we won't be using them again!!

Does anyone out there know why the maximum body length is 7 metre. It seems a bit illogical to me.
I have seen a Large 4x4 tow a Blade runner boat on it's trailer, the boat in question is 34ft long. It was also towed past a VOSA check point, without being pulled over.
I have asked a police officer about towing, he said as along as it complied with weight limitations there is no problem, When I said the same for towing a caravan, he said 'Oh, that's a different story' and walked away.
So I also would like to ask, was the 22ft body length an advisory note made by caravan manufacturers that became institutionalised, thus making it law by default, or was it a law to start with?
Food for thought? |
