Hi all

new caravanners here, so just joined up! We (due to inexperience) are having a problem with our lovely Avondale Dart. We wind the jocky wheel up as far as it will go, but when we go over the speed bumps - at caravan club sites! we scrape on the ground. We have same problem at home on our drive.

Any ideas at all?? much appreciated

You say you wind it up but do you then undo the clamp and pull it up as high as possible? Can you show me a picture of it?

There should be a lever below the winder on the side of the caravan chassis that you can loosen to pull the jockey wheel up out the way.

Yes, we have the same problem here. Our problem though relates to the towing vehicle.

The car we have by design is lower to the ground than some cars as it is a sports model, with low and stiff suspension. Even with the jockey wheel right up, it still catches the ground bumps.

I turn the wheel to face the front, this seems to help a bit. I need to get a small area of checker plate now where the turning wheel has marked the plastic surrounding the caravan hitch.

What car have you got?

If the jockey wheel is on the outside of the frame / casing then you may be able to get it a little higher by making sure that the wheel is going up outside the casing, I have to do that with my swift which gives you an extra couple of inches.

One other tip, just make sure that the winder handle is tight when you have raised the jockey wheel, had it unwind itself down the M1 last year and had to pull over on the hard sholder.

I won;t make that mistake again.

Thanks for this helpfull feedback - it's nice to see that we are not alone! Yes we wind up to the highest setting and turn the wheel to the front, we also have black marks now on the frame. We then pull the whole assembly up by loosening (and then re-tightening!) the clamp.

We are towing with a Toyota Avensis, maybe this is where our problem lies?

I suspect that the towbar is quiet low on your car. Even with my Santa Fe the towbar can seem low at times so I suspect in your case small dips etc could cause quiet an issue.

We can only take it easy especially when entering a site so that shoudl anything catch the ground we reduce the possability of damage.
