Posted: Tue May 06, 2008 12:54 pm Post subject: Injury warning, to all Caravanar's and any one towing
as it says above!
I would like you all to observe my warning, as it will save you from what i have had to endure over the last few days and future!
Myself, Wife. adult Daughter, and Grandson, went into sunny East Sussex last saturday, with the 2 berth (light ??) caravan, awnng etc etc
As i was instucted NOT to drive on the grass under any circumstance by the Warden, we didnt, so manhandled our small caravan onto the pitch
This in itself was not a wise decsision, as we got the jockey wheel in bedded into the grass, /very soft grass,
So me thinks, bugger the "no driving on the grass" and fetch the car to help in our quest, and reverse up to rehitch and then reverse
All was going well. as the tow ball was about 3" from the hitch, but was also 2-3" lower, so i tried to raise the Caravan on the jockey wheel,
The jockey wheel just sank ito the ground,
Yes, youve all got the scenario ?
I in my wisdom tried to lift the hitch on to the towball, when we heard a CRACK
and it was my back!!
I am now laid up for about 3 weeks, the Doc has been round, and in his judgement, i have ripped all the cartilidge/muscle in my lower back right from the spine, I am on Codydramol, Dicloflex , and when they dont work Ibupofen (spellings??)
And i am in agony when the drugs wear off
I am of sain mind! (was) and was fairly fit, yet this lapse in my judgement / intelligance, has rendered me useless, for quite a while, all over rushing to get the job done without thinking,
I would like to thank Brian, and his Wife, fellow caravaners, a couple of berths away, who offered support, and advice were ever they could, they also helpled my family get the van onto the pitch etc while i was incapicitated sitting in my car, they really were a gret help
, thanks
i never want to be in this situation again, either myself or others, and my Grandson had nighhtmares that night all because of me

Sorry to hear about your situation Steve.
This is something easily done where we should take note of what are our limits and make sure we do things properly.
Myself I have lifted the Caravan several times but never tried to move it at the same time.
As a suggestion if you haven;t already got one had you thought about a jockey wheel with a pneumatic wheel. These dig in soft ground far less. Also you may need to check your nose weight as this may have been overweight contributing to your injury.
Only suggestions to help as you may well have already done this and just without thought managed to put your back out, easily done.
I'm sure we all wish you a speedy recovery and for you to get back on the field as quickly as possible,
Paul

I am sure we have all done something similar so don't beat yourself up over it. We all rush a bit at some stage, in fact the last holiday we went on I was rushing so much getting my caravan back off a wet pitch, in anger with myself I towed the caravan off with the electrical lead still plugged in... great ! ...Hope you get well soon and get back to that caravanning... after all the sun is coming out and you can't miss out on it.

Were you talking about the EHU or the car electrics John?
If it was the EHU then that could have been quite a big issue.
So far I've driven off with the breakaway cable attached and also on another occasion the car electrics.
Fortunately there was no damage.

Agree with the pneumatic tyre saves me everytime.
Also the nose weight so many people overlook this and it si so simple to check.
Piece of wood and the bathroom scales.
I do hope that you recover soon and are back enjoying your van with the family.

Paul,
Oh yes, it was the main lead from the site pitch electricity source to the caravan ! ...luckily, the cable pulled straight from the connectors at the lead plug, leaving the plug in the power source.

That was lucky you could have caused a fair bit of damage there.
