We are bringing a UK caravan back to Spain, where we live. We have a Spanish car and have been told the UK van has to be registered here in Spain. Is this correct and how do we do it?

I have no idea on the registering it but i am sure like France you can take it out you just wont have spanish papers for it. can you get some info from a delaer over in Spain?

i think if it is not registered you cannot sell it over their but dont quote me on it, i will try to track some info down.

Well I've never heard of anything like this. Logically I would have thought that a Caravan is treated in just the same way as a trailer. It doesn't have an MOT or vehicle ownership documents so as long as teh manufacturers weight limits are observed then it should be fine.

Still someone is coming up with something here, I will keep watching.

I have spent a lot of time in Spain over the last five years and I know of many people who have bought Spanish cars and tried to bring in their UK caravan. It cant be re-registered there and would be illegal if towed with a Spanish car. You even have to have your car checked over by an ITV station (like our MOT) if you have a tow bar fitted and this has to be recorded on your log book. You can bring a Spanish caravan to the UK and just put new number plates on it, no problem, but visa versa - forget it. You can also take a British car to Spain and get it re-registered and plated in Spain, but even thats not easy. Bureaucracy has gone mad over there.

I also seem to think that in Germany the caravan has to have an MOT as well as the car. Not sure about other countries. Would not surprise me though!

I have just brought my caravan back from spain. If you live in Spain and are driving a Spanish registered car, then you must register your caravan, they have to have a seperate caravan number plate. the caravan has to be TUV tested were it is also registered. However, if you intend to tow the caravan with a British registered vehicle, there is no need to get the van TUV tested.
