hi all well were thinking of a change of plan with what caravan to buy next and are looking into the idea of buying a fendt or a hobby, but could do with few opinions ideas, before we jump in, they seem unbelievably good value for money you seem to get an awful lot of van for your cash, i know their foriegn and the doors on the wrong side and their the other way round to a british van and thier associated with travellers (none of this bothers us in the slightest btw) but im wandering is that the only reason theyre so cheap? are you comprimising on build quality? are the fixtures and fittings 'cheap'? are they built to last? ive never been inside one so i dont know, but theres some lovely looking vans out there,
thanks in advance! |

I am not a fan of Hobby vans, the older ones look far better build quality than the new from what i have seen (in my opinion anyway). Some sites do not allow Hobby vans on due to their association with the travelling community. However you do get alot of van for your money. Not much help am I |

Hi Fuosa,
Forgive me if I am wrong, but I am sure that I read on another forum, that some of the hobby vans are illegal to tow on british roads, something to do with either their length or width.Perhaps this is why they are a bargain.I also read that people are buying the hobbys and using them on long term pitches on sites.Anyway please don't take my word for it ,but look into it carefully before you buy.

I have just bought a Hobby 540UL, having traded in an Abbey in the process.
Firstly, Hobbys up to and including the 540 series are legal to tow in the UK as they are 2.3 mtrs wide.
Over the 540 series are 2.5 mtrs wide and can only legally be towed with a tow vwhicle which has a GVW of 3501kg or more, which rules out every 4x4 and "normal" tow vehicle.
What do you get for your money? a LOT of van and a finish that is impeccable, typically German engineering at its best.
Interior lighting for instance, on the Abbey it was just 3 round ceiling lights and two rather dim spot lights and two 240v wall lights, so either lots of light or very little.
In the Hobby there are 8 different lighting levels, dimmable main light and spotlights, indirect lighting behind the curtain pelmets, circumfrential lighting around the tops of the fitted units in the lounge area.
The oven.....in the British van when the oven was in use the whole interior got hot!!
With the Hobby, there is an extractor system, which vents all the excess hot air through the top fridge vent to the outside, keeping the inside at a comfortable level
Beds, fixed beds have interior sprung mattresses and are VERY comfortable.
Onboard 50 ltr water tank and its own waste water container stored in the front locker when not in use.
Are there downsides? yes if you see them as such, but can be overcome, like the hot water heater is electric only and a small capacity of 5 ltrs, but can be changed for an Ultrastore if you want to.
Thats just a few observations but please ask if you want to know more. |
