My company car is due for renewal soon and I am considering various options, some of which involve opting out and buying my own vehicle. I need to carry two dogs safely (ie If we have an accident, I don't want them flying about and injuring us or themselves), I would like to carry as much 'vanning paraphernalia as possible in or on the vehicle. The youngest of my kids is now 18 but we occasionally have one of them along with us so more than two seats is highly desirable.
Generally speaking, the three options are

Estate car with top box
Van (eg vito dualiner )
Pickup with hard top (eg L200)

Any ideas on the pro's and con's of each

I would go for a shogun rather than the L200. Its a much better ride and masses of boot space, and can carry a lot of weight.

What sort of caravan are you tugging? if its a big van and lots of gear it will have to be a 4x4 otherwise i would be looking at a estate of some sort.

I thought that two dog cages plus awning and one or two other bits might be too much to fit in the load area of most 4x4s. Maybe I need to have another look

The van is a Sterling Belvoir 520 (a variation on the Europa made for Grantham Caravans) and, at 1350Kg, is easily towed by my Mazda 6 diesel. The main issue is space rather than weight, as I’m getting fed up with storing and transporting the awning and various other bits in the caravan. Added to that, we’ve acquired two dogs since getting the Mazda I’d rather the travelled in cages rather than on the back seat as they do at the moment.

The way i do it with my jeep is to put the dogs in the back in the cages and the awning and other stuff on the back seat (if you are taking passengers you have to rethink but you can squash it all in if you are good) if you were to say buy a discovery the boot area is really high so you can fit stuff on-top of the cages or rack it so stuff can go under them.
I would be looking at a 4x4 if carrying capacity is an issue, but have you thought about a people carrier where all the rear seats can be removed so it turns into a van or add one seat if you have a passenger? most of them will be able to tug a van @ 1350kg

Interesting that nobody has mentioned vans. Even with a second row of seats I would have thought they have stacks of room and can tow anything. Is there a downside I haven't thought of?

Yes many sites don't allow vans as they are classed as commercial and associated with the travelling community. That being said attitudes are changing and some sites do allow it but its best to check when booking the site.

Hello All

Your looking at a likely kerb weight of 1450, The min kerb weight for the vehicle needs to be roughly 1700. We can highly recommend a The Ford Mondeo Estate.

Many Thanks
Wayne @ Grantham Caravans
