We are going to be sailing from Portsmouth on a 20.00hr sailing to Bilbao. As we have to travel from the N.England we want to leave plenty of time to travel. Does anybody out there know of a car park in the area that will take the car and caravan if we arrive early, or do you know if you can park on the dock side. What do you folks do - we have previously travelled in a M.home so there was no problem with parking up for a few hours, but towing a c'van is quite a different story. Thank you, please post your replies as we find them useful.

Depends on when during the year if you can find room in the ferry port's apron.
Most of the year its possible to wait in the holding queue lines, gets very full holiday period on popular sailings.

Parking even without a van is "B" awful in the Portsmouth environs area.

If your coming via the A34 there is a reasonable motorway like service area just south of the A303 crossing, [known locally as Sutton Scotney] that's 38 miles out of the port and at the time you are quoting a good 45 minutes running time.
If on the M3 there is a service just North of Winchester again similar distance and time out.
In both cases with the van in tow its easier to use the M3 from Winchester down onto the M27 east. Tune into Radio Solent on 96.1 when North of Winchester and listen for any road hold-ups as the 18:00 time you going to be about things can jam up big time.

Hi colndot

The Winchester services on the M3 has very limited facilities for a car/caravan unit. Last time I was there, they had bays for just 3 outfits, 2 were taken up by white van men. You could continue onto M27, pass south bound Rownham services, at next junction return on opposite direction and use the north bound Rownham services to park up. When you need to depart to Portsmouth just follow M27.
Hope this is clear enough to understand?

Yes Winchester Services is much more limited than the A34 option.
As Oldsalt said if you cant get in there go on but follow the Bournemouth not the Portsmouth signs, this first takes you past the West bound Rownhams. Just after that come off, go round the roundabout and back on the motorway to get into the Rownhams East bound services.
Only snag here is getting out and then quickly across the M3 lanes to get over to the M27s lanes, could be very difficult at that time of day.
I would recommend instead to call into the West bound Rownhams for your stop; things will be much easier to get into the right lane when just driving past the East bound Services.
Hope that does not confuse things.

Hi colndot,

Just a thought! If you are Caravan Club members, you could overnight at the Fareham club site. Unhitch, and go and do a check and familiarise yourself the route to the ferry port. Make the next day a lot less stressful maybe?

That isn't a bad idea, the thought of traffic ongestion can ruin the trip.
